2013 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 128. You may be surprised by this review, and frankly, so am I. It all started Saturday at Spec’s while buying some inexpensive daily drinkers. One of the oldest Penfolds Bin series, cool climate Shiraz and a low price of $20 to boot. I followed it over the course of two nights. I think this is surprisingly complex, but pretty big by my standards. Clearly high octane, it has really juicy blackberry and oodles of mint/eucalyptus and dusty, earthy tannins. This needs to be consumed with highly spiced foods like a ack of lamb or even Samosas. This is good and there is a time and place for a wine like this, but I still think that Margaret River and Victoria make more elegant cool climate wines and I would prefer those in general. I enjoyed it though and wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again for the right food pairing or occasion.
