2012 Andreas Laible Riesling Achat is drinking close to peak. The wine has softened dramatically since I last tried it 4 years ago and shows white peach, spring water, intense minerality and hints of sea salt and nutmeg. Amazing stuff and I am inching more and more into the camp of those who believe trocken Riesling needs to be aged. Based on my current experiences, I find age 6-10 to be the sweet spot (depending on the quality of the wine).

2012 Enderle & Moll Pinot Noir Buntsandstein just blows me away. Beautiful nose of black tea, green tobacco leaf, cinnamon, tree bark and pine tar. On the palate, this is all about strawberry, boysenberry, black tea and a touch of leather. Stunning intensity on the finish despite a very opaque, light ruby color. Chambolle-like texture. One of the very best Fass Selections imports. Stunner.

2012 Viña Magaña Navarra Dignus is a huge disappointment. I know this will sound harsh, but just say no. Tastes like it has been acidified, completely unbalanced, shrill acidity and weird fruit. $16 I will never get back. How did any of this ever score over 90? I also note with great interest that the label I have is different from the one I find on cellartracker and elsewhere online…maybe related to this particular import? Maybe they sent their worst stuff to the US? Either way…brutal.

2012 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine Raymond Roure is a fantastic bottle of wine. Red and black fruit with olive tapenade and a pronounced dried herb/garrigue note that seems slightly unconventional for Crozes. That said, this has a soaring structure, plenty of acid and is both clean and complex. If you are expecting rusticity from this, you will be disappointed because it really drinks more like an Hermitage than a Crozes-Hermitage. And that, I believe, is the “secret” to this wine. The more time in bottle you can give this, the better. If you open one now, it needs a decant of several hours to show well. Treat it like an Hermitage and in another 5-10 years it will begin paying dividends.

2012 Sella & Mosca Carignano del Sulcis Riserva Terre Rare is such an amazing wine foe the money. 100% Carignano from the coastal southwestern part of Sardinia, this shows both forceful and pretty with cherry, spice and a certain sandy/limestone/charcoal quality that I can’t quite explain. It also has a savory note on the finish that I love. $16 at Central Market here in Austin before case discounts…this is a case purchase if there ever was one.

2012 Domaine Richeaume Cuvée Columelle is just such a fun wine to drink. Started out hard as nails on night one with pure blackberry and blueberry and imposing tannins. On night two, and eventually night 3, the tannins had softened and the most amazing finessed earth, herbs and mushroom notes started to peek out from behind mostly brambly blackberry. Way too young, yet so fun to drink already. A blend of 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Syrah and 4.5% Merlot.

2012 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Cune Reserva was the clear winner of the every day drinking wine contest. This is so much more polished than the Monsanto that preceded it, it isn’t even funny. Dark berry fruit with dried herbs, cold smoke and a hint of dill pickle (from the oak barrel) were consistent from nose to palate and this showed round and generously, but had plenty of acid to keep the tension alive. At $12 this is substantially less expensive than the Monsanto and a world apart in quality.

2012 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny Clos de L’Echelier. This wine has me slightly unsure…while it is perfectly good stuff, it just doesn’t blow me away. Black currant, tobacco, camphor and bell pepper. Nice typicity based on its growing region, but I just thought this felt just a touch uninspired…nothing wrong per second, but a wine that makes me wonder if it will improve as it ages.

2012 Domaine Florent Garaudet Monthélie 1er Cru Les Champs Fulliot. Stunner wine. Crunchy red berries and tree bark. Mean and fierce tannins galore. Because the tannins are so big and the fruit so pretty, this needs at least an hour before it settles into its groove. I found overnight in the cellar to get even better results. Lovely.

2012 Poggio Graffetta Nero d’Avola. Had this with dinner last night. Quite a nice weekday wine that shows ripe plum and blackberry with some earth and herbs. Fruit forward and friendly with some air. It dies pack a punch of flavor. I would definitely buy this again. $16 locally at Spec’s.

2012 Wagner-Stempel Riesling trocken as the pre-game Superbowl wine. I know this is not the most expensive trocken Riesling nor the fanciest one I have in the cellar, but it is the dry Riesling that always blows me away with its white peach fruit, fresh cut flowers and a touch of petrol on the nose. Just crazy good.
