2012 Weltner Rödelseer Küchenmeister Riesling trocken

2012 Weltner Rödelseer Küchenmeister Riesling trocken brings the Diesel! The Diesel/gasoline note is very much front and center on the nose and the palate entry. Once I get past that initial note, this mellows out a d shows a mineral and fruit profile not unlike a 1er Cru Chablis. Both weight and lithe at the same time. Finish is strong and overall, this is a great wine that borders on intellectual. I also LOVE the glass stopper enclosure.

2012 Andreas Laible Riesling Achat

2012 Andreas Laible Riesling Achat is drinking close to peak. The wine has softened dramatically since I last tried it 4 years ago and shows white peach, spring water, intense minerality and hints of sea salt and nutmeg. Amazing stuff and I am inching more and more into the camp of those who believe trocken Riesling needs to be aged. Based on my current experiences, I find age 6-10 to be the sweet spot (depending on the quality of the wine).

2008 Später-Veit Spätburgunder "P"

2008 Später-Veit Spätburgunder “P” is a brilliant wine. If I served this blind and told people it was Chambolle, they would buy it…that’s how good this is. It has beautiful red fruit, minerality and laser focused acidity and spice on the finish. At age 9, this is firing on all cylinders. After trying this, I have to agree with @grapeylyle that the Mosel is prime real Estate for the future great Spätburgunders of Germany. Stunning.

2004 Wittmann Westhofener Riesling Trocken 'S'

2004 Wittmann Westhofener Riesling Trocken ‘S’ is the kind of wine that reminds you why you collect and cellar wine in the first place. At age 13 it came out of the bottle in a gold color that looked like it was a vin jaune. But soon after it starts a total transformation. The color begins to look a little less yellow and the nose doesn’t quite feature as much diesel, and it develops into something that is almost like a white burgundy. It shows honey, pear, apple and hazelnuts and has a smooth but laser focused acidity that plays in the background. Mind bending stuff.

2007 Josef Walter Bürgstadter Centgrafenberg Spätburgunder "J" trocken

2007 Josef Walter Bürgstadter Centgrafenberg Spätburgunder “J” trocken. Total ‘wow’ wine. Whatever you think German Spätburgunder is, throw it out the window before you drink this wine. The closest thing to this that I remember tasting in the past is a 1999 LeRoy Bourgogne or an older Lafarge vilage. Completely transparent ruby red color, with a serious structure that makes me think “whole cluster” and cherry and tertiary flavors. Needs a little air to stretch its legs but sings thereafter. Made from a Grand Cru (Grosses Gewächs) vineyard but Herr Walter cannot call it that because he is not a member of the VDP. Mind blowing.

2013 Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier Mölsheim Riesling trocke

2013 Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier Mölsheim Riesling trocken. I nursed this for several days. I began to drink this on Saturday while I watched meine Mannschaft put on a thriller against Italy and I then followed the wine for a couple of days. The bottom line is that this is outstanding. But it is not without some quirks. First of all, this is a white that needs air. Lots of air. When popped and poured, it is tightly wound and too structured, which is not ideal if you want to drink it with some mildly flavored foods. So planning ahead is critical. But it does reward patience with pretty and laser focused peach and apple and a lovely lip smacking finish. This is a dry white that can and will age well.
